Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurologic disease characterized by slow motion (bradykinesia), tremor (typical pill-rolling of thumb and second finger), and rigidity or stiffness. It results from the degeneration of dopamine-transmitting Purkinje cells in the part of the brainstem called the “substantia nigra”. Although years of research have not fully clarified the causes, the weight of evidence suggests environmental factors play a major role, including toxic exposures from chemicals, heavy metals, and head trauma. Modern commentators have revealed new understandings of causation and new treatments not typically known by neurologists. Read on to learn more about some of these cutting-edge proposed treatments.
